Smith Holds On for Top-Five at Mobile

Casey Smith earned a top-five finish in the Southern Super Series Lee Field Memorial Saturday at Mobile International Speedway (AL).  The Austin, Texas driver qualified his No. 99 machine in the 11th position and worked his way through the field to a fifth-place finish.

Smith made quick progress early on in the 150-lap race, makings his way up into the fourth position at the halfway break.  After a 10 minute break at lap 75, Smith continued to march forward, moving as high as second position in the final 75 laps.  However, Smith battled an ill-handling race car and fell back over the final laps, holding on to record another strong finish.

“We had a really good car, just a little free off,” said Smith.  “I should have swapped the left side tires at the break and I feel like if I would have I could have challenged for the win.  150 laps was just too far to go on the left rear tire, so it gave up the last 20 laps.”

Smith stays with the Southern Super Series and will be back on track September 9-11 for the Alabama200.  Smith picked up a win at the Montgomery, Alabama track last year and finished seventh in the 200 a year ago.

“I won a race there last year and I feel like I’ll have a really good chance at winning this year.”
