Smith Hopes to Shake Monkey Off His Back at Penscola

South Alabama Speedway is a track where Casey Smith has experienced success in the past.  He earned a runner-up finish at The Rattler in March and felt good about his car heading into the Southern Super Series 125 Saturday night.  However, a mechanical problem early in the race would end his night early and leave the defending series champion still searching for his first win of the year.

“We’ve pretty much run good every time we’ve come here” said Smith.  “We had a chance to win the Rattler, and had a really good car there and I felt like we had a really good car tonight.  We were really fast in practice, but just 15 laps into it the car started to get really tight off and really free in and I think we might have broken the center link bracket or something.  It’s disappointing because we love this place and would like to be able to get the monkey off our back, we’ve had really good cars, just haven’t won anything this year.”

Smith returns to the Southern Super Series again July 22 at Five Flags Speedway and hopes he can put his No. 99 machine in Victory Lane there.  The Austin, Texas driver posted a strong run at Pensacola in the series’ first visit there in May, with a second place run, but when they returned at the end of May, he struggled with a 16th-place finish.  Smith hopes he can put together another strong run and earn his first win of the year.

“Pensacola’s one of those places you’ve got to stay on your toes all weekend and keep dialing it in,” said Smith.  “It would mean a lot, especially with the year we’ve had, not winning yet, it would mean a lot to be able to go there, run good and win.  We struggled there last time and had a really good car there the first time, so hopefully we can capitalize on what we learned the first time there.”
